Tracking a completed job

Tracking a completed job

Good Morning,

By way of introduction: I have absolutely no experience with or functional knowledge of AS400. However, I recently started a job as a "systems engineer" and about a week after I started, the AS400 guy got himself fired, and I inherited the system. Yay.

My problem: So today a user came in and said that he ran a report; it "completed" but never printed. I know the user's username. Is there a way I can find the job that he submitted, and force it to re-print?

Thank you,

Chad

Hi, Chad.

Most likely it was a job submitted to batch that produced a report.  You can check his job log using:

WRKUSRJOB USER(<userid>)

Check his active jobs job log for any clues.  You may also see jobs that are ended have have reports (spooled files) listed as well.

Now, if the job completed, but didn't print, there are a few things that could have happened:

  • There was no report created.  For example, an open invoice list could be empty if there are no open invoices.  :)
  • It did create a report but the spooled file is on an output queue that isn't attached to a printer.
  • It created a report and the printer is waiting for someone to add paper, or some other message for that output queue.

I feel for you getting thrown into this job and needing to learn on the fly.  There are many resources all over the internet that can help, but it's going to be a little slow going at first.

My advice... ask for a raise and training.  :)

Brad

Hey Brad,

Thanks for the help! I finally got it figured out. As your your suggestion about a raise and training - well we're "supposed" to be moving away from AS400 "soon". If it doesn't happen within a month though, I might just ask for those things.

Thanks,

Chad

Good to hear you got it figured out.

Bad to hear you're moving away from the system.  It's quite a nice system.  What I'm finding, though, is that companies just aren't putting the time into learning it and providing a system operator anymore and that can cause frustration.  They expect the programmers to wear too many hats.

Anyhow, glad to hear from you.
